This article explores the struggles of a person experiencing a reading slump and how they turned to bibliotherapy for help. The author details their experience with Lucy Pearson, a bibliotherapist, and the advice she gave to overcome the reading rut.
Not being able to get into any book I picked up was an affliction I couldn’t shake. With a little help from the literary doctor Lucy Pearson, this is how I finally fixed it
Bibliotherapy, you won’t need telling, is not a licensed health practice. However, it is something which has a long history of making the most of the many proven“The word bibliotherapy comes from the Greek for ‘book’ and ‘healing’,” Pearson says. “So it’s the practice of using books to support wellbeing, and dates to the era of the ancient Greeks whenin hospitals and books were prescribed to patients.
Our session begins with us trying to diagnose the cause of the problem. She quizzes me on how long the slump has lasted for, how exactly it is manifesting, what I’ve tried so far. We then discuss the last time I actually enjoyed reading, what books I was picking up at that time, and what was happening in my life then. The answer to which is: I was on a, undistracted by life, barely on my phone, and reading some of the best books I’ve ever read .
This advice is especially important when you are starting a book. “When you pick up a book for the first time,,” she says. “Some of the best books take a little while to get into. I always think of it a bit like going on a date with someone: you wouldn’t leave after less than five minutes. You have to give the book a chance, and reading it for an hour is a good way to do that.”
which she couldn’t get into when she first started it two months ago. “I recently decided to try again on a plane journey: now I’m 200 pages in and loving it,” she says. “I realise I was just in the wrong state of mind when I first read it.”When she recommends re-reading old favourites as another means of kickstarting a book habit again, I tell her that idea stresses me out: there are too many books in the world to waste time going back to ones I’ve already ticked off.
