Not getting enough sleep may have an impact on your cardiovascular health. New research found that inadequate sleep can lead to an increase in the risk of developing hypertension, and the risk may be heightened in women and people under 60.

After crunching the numbers, the researchers found a link between sleeping less than seven hours and a 7% increased risk of hypertension. The odds rose to 11% for people who slept less than five hours a night. Future research should focus on standardizing methodologies to enhance the “comparability and generalizability” of new findings, Sood said.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that adults 60 and younger aim for at least seven hours of sleep a night. Those between 61 and 64 should get seven to nine, and people 65 and older need seven or eight.
