There are a myriad of tree pollens out there and some can be more bothersome than others.
If it’s grass or ragweed that you are allergic to, you still have time to enjoy the outdoors before that unpleasantness arrives. But not all tree pollen. What causes itchy eyes or a runny nose in one sufferer, may have little to no effect on another. Why is that?To better understand the particulars of tree pollen allergies we spoke with several experts. We found that genetics, amount of exposure and perhaps even other factors contribute to the onset of allergies.
But in some cases, the immune system mistakenly identifies harmless pollen as something that also needs to be repelled, saidWhy this happens is not completely understood, he said, but it occurs primarily as the result of genetic predisposition and the degree of exposure to a specific type of pollen. Friedlander said he diagnosed one patient as being allergic to hickory pollen, to which the patient responded, “Oh, I have three hickories in my backyard.”Sophie Warny/Lousiana State UniversityThere are a myriad of pollen types out there but only a fraction present a problem.
Friedlander said he only tests for about 50 to 60 allergies, and about half are for pollens. Oak, maple and birch are the primary offenders, followed by sycamore, hickory, elm and ash.Pollen grains come in different shapes and sizes and with various furrows and projections.
“It’s more like a lock and a key mechanism,” he said. There’s a lock on one’s cells and if pollen opens them, a reaction occurs.“It’s kind of random in how that forms,” Brooks said, with the antibodies taking their cue from the shape of the pollen.Allergies can be treated in a different ways. One can take antihistamines that block the production of histamines. Sufferers can also take allergy shots that teach the body to ignore the pollen.
