I’ve been writing about technology for two decades and am routinely struck by how the sector swings from startling innovation to persistent repetitiveness. My areas of specialty are wearable tech, cameras, home entertainment and mobile technology.
Nothing has suddenly announced a new phone. It’s a strikingly different-looking version of the most recent Phone , updating the company’s trademark transparent look with primary colors. This is the first time the company has put all three primary colors, red, blue and yellow into the same device. Nothing has always has great design sense, and strong use of color—look no further than the gorgeous yellow option for the new Ear headphones—but this phone is more colorful than previous products.
Just as interesting, I’d say, is the way the white and gray areas are picked out, spelling out the word TWO appropriately enough . Nothing is a London-based company with an industrial design team based in the King’s Cross area of the city, and the Design Director, Adam Bates, made this statement about the surprise new release.
“We are very happy to unveil Phone Special Edition. The first product to explore our palette of the primary colours; red, blue and yellow. Its overall aesthetic references some of our design heroes from the past, whilst creating a new expression for a smartphone. Elevating a functional device into a striking piece of art."
The tech specs of the phone remain unchanged from the release of the Phone earlier this year, with dual 50-megapixel rear cameras, which peep out of the back like a pair of curious eyes, a 6.7-inch AMOLED screen and the company’s trademark light patterns, which it calls the Glyph interface. The new Special Edition has 12GB of RAM and 256GB storage, and costs £349 or 379€. It’s available for order now from nothing.
