Nottingham City Transport (NCT) will be phasing out Wi-Fi on most of its buses from early 2025 due to low usage and rising costs.
Wi-Fi is being turned off on most Nottingham City Transport (NCT) buses this year as the company says it can no longer 'justify the cost' of providing it. NCT says less than 5% of its customers are now using Wi-Fi on the bus network and that it will be turned off from early 2025 on all diesel and bio-gas buses.
The company provides Wi-Fi through dedicated on board equipment which now needs replacing, but NCT says: 'As the number of sessions has declined considerably since we first introduced Wi-Fi, we cannot justify the cost of new equipment or the annual data charges when less than 5% of our customers now use our Wi-Fi'. For NCT's electric fleet, the company has been able to find a way of providing Wi-Fi on buses through existing equipment. This system, already in use on the electric bus fleet, will be introduced on all new buses, but will not affect the existing diesel and bio-gas fleet. NCT says it had made the decision 'reluctantly', adding: 'Sorry for the inconvenience caused by this change'. It comes as the new £3 cap on bus fares comes into force from January 1, lasting until the end of 2025, an increase on the previous £2 cap. David Astill, NCT's managing director, said: 'We accept that the fare cap has to increase to be affordable, but urge our customers to transfer to buying a day ticket if making more than one journey in order to avoid the increase in the single fare. NCT continues to offer some of the lowest bus fares in the country and with our high frequency services we offer a genuine alternative to using the car'
