Jill Colbert, director for children and education services at Nottingham City Council, has resigned after four months in the role due to personal reasons. The council is currently searching for a permanent replacement.

Nottingham City Council's director for children and education services, Jill Colbert, has stepped down from her position after only four months. Colbert was appointed in September 2022 to assist the Labour-led council in its efforts to enhance the department, which had received an 'inadequate' rating from Ofsted in 2022. The education watchdog has been conducting regular visits over the past two years to evaluate the progress made in addressing these concerns.

Coun Cheryl Barnard, Executive Member for Children, Young People and Education, informed the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS) that Colbert's departure was due to personal reasons. She expressed disappointment, stating that Colbert was eager to contribute to the council's improvement journey. A recruitment campaign commenced in January, with a salary range of £142,950 to £166,434 advertised for the role. Council documents reveal that 12 applications were received, and four candidates have been shortlisted for consideration. Final interviews are scheduled for February 14th.Following Ofsted's sixth and concluding monitoring visit late last year, the watchdog acknowledged that progress in improving the city's children's services is being maintained despite significant financial constraints. However, Ofsted pointed out that there remains an excessive number of young children residing in children's homes, including some unregistered 'illegal' establishments, due to a shortage of suitable foster carers and residential placements. Cllr Barnard confirmed that Sarah Nardone has been appointed as the interim corporate director for children and education services while a permanent successor is sought. Nardone has been seconded from Lincolnshire, where she previously served as a children's services assistant director specializing in transformation and improvements. Lincolnshire County Council has been actively collaborating with Nottingham City Council as an improvement partner for its children's services
