A Nottingham driver, Corey Ashley, was caught driving nearly five times the legal cocaine limit during a high-speed chase. He drove at dangerous speeds, ignored traffic signals, and forced other road users to take evasive action. The pursuit ended when the car crashed, and the driver received a suspended prison sentence.
A Nottingham driver was almost five times the legal limit for cocaine when he led police on a high-speed car chase . Corey Ashley was told that “it was only by good fortune he didn't kill someone” as he careered at breakneck speeds, jumped red lights and forced other road users to take evasive action to avoid collisions.
During the pursuit, the unemployed defendant’s BMW, which was on cloned plates, reached 80mph down a narrow lane and even carried on at 50mph when all four tyres had been popped by the force’s stinger device. It only came to an end in Burton Joyce when the vehicle smashed into a wall, “which seemed to explode,” Judge Julie Warburton told Nottingham Crown Court. Sending the 30-year-old to prison for 15 months, suspended for two years, she said: “You knew you had taken two different drugs, you knew the car was on cloned plates, and you chose to drive at ridiculous speeds, putting several other road users in danger. “Frankly, you were behind the wheel of a highly dangerous weapon, and it is only by good fortune you didn’t kill someone.” Megan Morrison, prosecuting, said the pursuit began in Westdale Lane, Mapperley , at around 3pm on March 16, 2025. She said the black BMW alerted the police that it might be on cloned plates, and so officers decided to try and pull it over. The prosecutor said that Ashley, of Burton Joyce, who was also over the driving limit for cannabis, 'reversed at speed and then accelerated off”. Miss Morrison said: “He reached 70mph in a 30mph limit, which caused the car to bounce over speed bumps. “He ignored a give way sign on Foxhill Road, went straight over a junction at 50mph, forcing other road users to take evasive action to avoid a collision. “In Lambley Lane he went through a temporary set of traffic lights on red doing 65mph, reached 80mph and on Stoke Lane - a narrow country lane - forced a woman with a child on a bike and a man with another child to step back into a hedge. “He went through many red lights, went on to the opposite side of the carriageway, around central reservations on the wrong side of the road and continued to drive at 50mph even after the tyres had been stung by the police. “In Poplars Avenue, Burton Joyce, the chase finally came to an end when he crashed into a wall and fence.” The prosecutor said Ashley, of Poplars Avenue, was tested and found to be almost five times the limit for cocaine and also over the limit for cannabis. He went on to plead guilty to dangerous driving and drug driving, and he has a previous drug-driving conviction on his record from March 2023. Chris Brewin, mitigating, said his client has been diagnosed with an emotionally unstable personality disorder and has issues with anger management. He said: “He has stopped taking illicit drugs and gone back to cycling. “I say that because he tells me when he was younger he used to compete in races all over Europe only stopping when he broke his collarbone in an accident. “He was a gas fitter and engineer working for E.On for seven years, but he is not in work at the moment. “He wants to get back into employment and carve a path away from this catastrophic event.' As part of the suspended sentence order, the defendant was ordered to carry out 150 hours of unpaid work and to attend 15 rehabilitation sessions. He was also disqualified from driving for two years and ordered to pay £150 costs.
