A long-abandoned business centre in Basford, Nottingham, continues to deteriorate despite pledges of redevelopment. The building's dangerous state and unappealing appearance have prompted calls for action from local councillors.
A notorious Nottingham eyesore remains derelict and dangerous, despite promises that its long-awaited transformation would begin this year. Dr Balvinder Mehat, who owns the decrepit former Irwin Business Centre on Church Street in Basford , previously said its regeneration would finally start at the beginning of 2024.
However, as the year ends, no visible progress has been made at the ruined site - in fact, the building's apocalyptic look has only been worsened by a fire that broke out in January. The business centre, which was never used after being built in 2008, has long been a concern for neighbours and local councillors. The latter are now once again calling for action to halt the decline of the building, which they say gives tram passengers a bad impression of Basford as soon as they get to the stop next to it. Salma Mumtaz, Labour ward councillor for Basford on the city council, had a meeting with council officials in early December over the future of the eyesore. She said: 'I'm just waiting for a response from the city council now, as I've told them I want some action to be taken. It's dangerous and a health and safety risk - there have been so many fires there and we have to find a solution soon.' Ms Mumtaz previously raised concerns for homeless people who had been squatting inside of the vandalised and heavily damaged structure, following January's fire. Although plans to convert the long-deserted centre into 24 apartments were given the go-ahead in 2020, these were not implemented within Nottingham City Council's three-year time limit. It was unveiled last year that Dr Mehat owned the building. Dr Mehat said in late 2023 that he could not say whether a new plan would have to be submitted to move the project forward, but claimed progress would be made 'very early' in 2024
