Amin Ali, 35, was driving at twice the speed limit when he lost control of his taxi, narrowly missing pedestrians and causing significant damage to parked cars. He was sentenced to a suspended jail term after admitting dangerous driving.
A Nottingham father-of-one was sentenced for dangerous driving after a speeding taxi crash that nearly killed three people. Nottingham Crown Court heard how Amin Ali, 35, was driving at twice the speed limit when he lost control of the vehicle, colliding with a parked car and sending it onto the roof of another. Two pedestrians had to narrowly avoid being hit, one of whom still suffers nightmares from the incident.
In the aftermath of the crash, Ali was accused of taking selfies and laughing as he was breathalyzed. While Ali disputes the selfie allegation, he admitted to using his phone after the crash. The incident occurred on May 1, 2023, at around 7:15 pm on Carlton Road. The driver of the parked car, who was already recovering from a previous accident, witnessed the speeding taxi heading towards him at an estimated 60 to 70 mph in a 30 mph zone. He braced for impact and closed his eyes, resulting in his car being pushed onto a parked Mini. The prosecution argued that Ali's actions were reckless and posed a significant danger to others. Witnesses reported seeing men removing taxi signs from Ali's Toyota and attempting to intimidate the car owner into accepting blame for the crash. Recorder Anna Marie Trussler, sentencing Ali, stated that the incident could have resulted in fatalities and emphasized the gravity of his actions. Despite the seriousness of the offense, Ali's sentence was suspended due to his wife's lack of English and the impact a custodial sentence would have on their six-month-old child. He was given a 15-month jail term, suspended for 18 months, ordered to complete 150 hours of unpaid work, attend 20 rehabilitation sessions, and banned from driving for 18 months. He was also required to pay £400 compensation to three of the victims
