Nottingham Forest's strong performance in the Premier League has local authorities and businesses excited about the potential economic benefits of the team reaching European competition. A Champions League qualification would bring significant financial rewards for the club, leading to stadium redevelopment and job creation. It would also attract thousands of fans to the city, boosting the hospitality industry and putting Nottingham in the spotlight.
Nottingham Forest’s continued charge towards Champions League football next season has excited councillors and local businesses about the potential impact European football could have on the city. Nuno Espirito Santo’s side currently sit third in the Premier League after Sunday’s home victory over Southampton and the prospect of a first campaign in Europe’s premier club competition since 1980/81 is becoming a real possibility.
“Imagine thousands of fans coming to Nottingham for 2/3 days at a time. The hotel and hospitality industry would get a massive boost. The increased scrutiny from the media, especially the football media outside the UK, would put a spotlight onto the city which will benefit tourism outside of the obvious football connection.”
Champions League qualification would see Forest play a minimum of eight European games next season, four of which would be played at the City Ground and those extra clashes would provide local pubs with opportunities to boost their revenue. “When people go and watch European football, they do a bit more planning, they make a mini break out of it," continued Mr James. “Let’s say Munich fans, they’re going to come a day earlier , and they’ll come to the Boot Room, have a drink, see the memorabilia and they’ll love it. It’s a pleasure for European teams to come to Nottingham, so if we can become part of their mini break, it can only be a benefit.
Forest have a rich European history having won the European Cup twice in consecutive seasons under legendary manager Brian Clough and assistant Peter Taylor in 1979 and 1980. But Nottingham City Council deputy leader Ethan Radford thinks that Champions League qualification for Forest would be an opportunity for the club to write a “new chapter” in their history.
