A nurse at Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham recounted the harrowing experience of a man entering the A&E department with a concealed knife. The incident, which sparked a swift response from staff and police, highlights the increasing threat of violence against healthcare workers.

A nurse at Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham recounted the chilling experience of a man arriving at the emergency department with a knife concealed in his waistband. Adam Watson, 28, received an eight-month prison sentence for bringing the blade into the A&E unit in the early hours of January 18th. The incident began when a taxi driver noticed Watson carrying the knife and alerted hospital staff.

Security officers were immediately called, followed by the police, who apprehended Watson and charged him with carrying a knife in a public place.Emergency department sister Laura McSorley emphasized the importance of ensuring patient and staff safety during the stressful situation. She stated, 'My main focus was ensuring everyone in the department was safe. Aggression, violence, and harassment have no place at NUH. We're committed to maintaining a safe, respectful environment for all.' Staff nurse Nikki Goddard, who was with Watson during his initial triage, described the fear experienced by the staff. 'My main priority was the safety of our patients in main reception and colleagues working in the department. We were all very frightened as we know how quickly things can escalate. Had that taxi driver not rang in, it could have been a lot worse. It could have gone a completely different way if we hadn't acted quickly and calmly.', she said. The Nottingham University Hospitals Trust (NUH) has observed a concerning increase in incidents of aggression, violence, and harassment against their staff over the last three years. In 2022 alone, over 2,000 such incidents were reported. To address this growing problem, NUH has implemented several measures, including body-worn cameras for staff and withholding treatment from violent and aggressive patients when deemed appropriate. Victoria Fensome, Divisional Nurse for Medicine at NUH, previously praised the quick thinking and professionalism of the emergency department and security staff, stating, 'I want to pay tribute to my ED and security colleagues. Thanks to their professionalism under difficult circumstances, they averted a potentially fatal incident.
