Despite this, the QMC faced a significant challenge in December, with 578 patients enduring waits exceeding 12 hours before being admitted. This occurred amidst one of the busiest Decembers on record for NHS services nationwide, with a staggering 2.35 million people visiting A&Es. Over half of these patients, 1.44 million, sought treatment at major 'Type 1' A&E departments, which offer comprehensive 24-hour consultant-led care with resuscitation facilities and designated areas for accident and emergency patients. Lisa Kelly, NUH's chief operating officer, expressed regret for the extended wait times but emphasized the trust's ongoing efforts to improve the situation. She acknowledged the impact of winter viruses, which affected NHS services earlier and more severely than the previous year, highlighting the challenging circumstances faced by staff. Kelly further explained that the trust is actively collaborating with system partners to expedite patient flow and ensure their safe and timely discharge. She highlighted the launch of a pilot scheme aimed at reducing ambulance handover times at the ED, understanding the risks associated with patients waiting at home for medical assistance. This initiative has enabled ambulances to respond to other emergencies more quickly but has also placed additional strain on the ED. Despite these pressures, Kelly commended the unwavering dedication of her team in providing essential care to patients. She also outlined various measures implemented to safeguard elective activities, including dual-operating methods, short-stay orthopaedic pathways, and the establishment of dedicated winter wards. These strategies aim to free up beds for patients in most urgent need. Finally, Kelly appealed to the public for their understanding and cooperation, encouraging them to explore alternatives to the ED whenever possible.
