Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust (NUH) is experiencing a high volume of flu and other winter viruses, prompting them to ask the public to avoid hospitals unless absolutely necessary. With over 100 flu cases across its wards and staff also dealing with norovirus, NUH is urging people to stay home if they are experiencing flu, Covid, or stomach-related illnesses. Despite the pressures, NUH has taken steps to prepare for the winter surge, including increasing operating theatre capacity and opening a new ward.
People suffering from the flu and other winter viruses have been told to stay away from Nottingham's hospitals if they can as winter heaps pressure on health workers. Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust , which runs Queen's Medical Centre and City Hospital, currently has more than 100 cases of the flu across its wards.
Lisa Kelly, chief operating officer for Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust, said the city's two hospitals had planned carefully for the difficult winter period. She said: “NUH, like many other Trusts, has seen some cases of norovirus in December. However, we now have only a handful of cases. It has increased the capacity of operating theatres and is opening up a new ward at QMC to handle the increased demand for bed spaces during winter, following on from the opening of the 27-bed Newell Ward at City Hospital. However, Ms Kelly said patients could also make a difference themselves by being careful about attending hospital, especially when showing signs of suffering from winter sicknesses.
