It was a real family affair

A Nottingham rugby club achieved the stuff of dreams at the weekend by playing at Twickenham, the English home of the contact sport.

“One thing we’ve always done well is recruit students”, said Colts transition officer Alan Avery, “so we’ve always had that social playing atmosphere for students. We’ll often look at the structure for how students play at university, for example, so these are quite high levels and competitive. What we do is target the level perhaps below that, and we can then attract younger age groups locally, which then means all of a sudden we have this solid younger demographic at the club.

“We try and help them by reducing fees on that side of things, and it’s also about rewarding them and creating an atmosphere where they feel they’re making a positive contribution. Dylan is not only the youngest captain but also the first to rise through the club from junior to senior level. He recently led his team to promotion only a few days prior to the event and was able to grace the field with his father and brother, making the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity all the more special.

“The Moderns fans are always loud, so it was a great experience to also have them here. Hopefully this will encourage more people to get involved and support the club.”
