The Emerald Bar & Grill, Nottingham's pioneering Indian pub, is making waves with its innovative menu additions. From a bottomless brunch featuring a massive mixed grill and unlimited drinks to a healthy protein grill developed in collaboration with local fitness experts, The Emerald is pushing boundaries and catering to diverse palates. Since opening in December 2023, the pub has become a community hub, hosting events, car meets, and sporting screenings, solidifying its position as a unique destination in Nottingham.

It's been just over a year since Nottingham's first Indian pub, The Emerald Bar & Grill, opened its doors in Wilford. In that short time, it has captivated customers with its delicious mixed grills, hosted a multi-million pound car meet showcasing an impressive array of vehicles, and celebrated with Leicester City players when they achieved promotion to the Premier League. The Emerald Bar & Grill has an exciting year ahead in 2025, with a host of innovative concepts planned.

\One of the new offerings is a bottomless brunch, featuring a large mixed grill loaded with lamb chops, sheesh kebabs, wings, chicken tikka, fish pakoras, and hariyali chicken tikka. This feast will be accompanied by 90 minutes of unlimited drinks. There's also a vegetarian option, boasting onion bhajis, samosas, chilli cheese bites, paneer tikka, and chilli paneer. Guests can enjoy mimosas, prosecco, bottled beers, and non-alcoholic beverages, all for £35 per person or £30 for students, when it launches on Sunday, March 2nd. Jade Melady, who manages events and the pub's social media, shared their enthusiasm: 'We are hoping to run it once a month. We'll see how this one goes. Hopefully people will think it's really good value for money as you get a lot of food and obviously it's bottomless drinks as well. Hopefully people will love it and if they do we'll keep doing it.'\The bottomless brunch is just one of the exciting new ideas at the Wilford Lane pub. The Emerald is also introducing a healthy protein grill in collaboration with personal trainers at the nearby PureGym. Rahul Savji, the owner, explained the concept: 'The grills have a lot of protein but we will be making them healthier by taking away the lamb and fried fish and adding more chicken and grilled fish. One of the PTs has gone through and given us a calorie breakdown on everything. The guys at the gym were asking how much protein there was and I didn't know, but it gave me a brainwave. Nobody's ever done an Indian protein grill. Everyone seems to think Indian food is high in fat, oils, and yoghurt but it doesn't have to be. I used to go straight to Nando's after I went to the gym and our stuff is a lot fresher and healthier. I would say we're a lot more flavoursome and cost-effective. Being the first Indian mixed grill pub in Nottingham, we want to be the first at doing everything.' The Emerald, previously known as the Tailor's Arms, and before that, Wilford Green Pub and Kitchen, is a unique blend of a bar and restaurant. Since opening in December 2023, it has become deeply ingrained in the community, hosting a variety of events, including a large outdoor screen for last year's Euros, craft fairs, a food festival, and car meets. Jade commented: 'The car meets went down really well, basically getting people involved and bringing the pub back to life. We had classic cars, sports cars, super cars. It was a nice mixture, we even had bikes. Someone brought a DeLorean which was really cool. We held two last year and we're going to hold another one in the summer as everyone loved it.' Rahul added: 'We had £7.2 million pounds worth of cars in the car park. There were classic Ferraris, from Dinos to Testarossas - the line-up of those alone must have been £1m. It was fantastic, the amount of support we got from everyone, the cars that came down. We had to turn people away because we just didn't have enough room.' The pub boasts seven TVs displaying TNT and Sky Sports. Rahul said: 'The cricket with India in the final was mental. We had Indian drummers and it was a really good vibe. A lot of people round here love that they've got an Indian on their doorstep and secondly, it's got sports because there is nowhere around here that does sports. I think the closest sports bar venue to this is in West Bridgford. 'We're just planning at the moment India v Pakistan coming up at the end of this month so that will be a big game. It's early doors, opening at 9 o'clock - we normally open at 12 - so we're doing a shorter bar snack menu to give the chefs an easier run, and will do deals like we do for the football, like £3.50 on house pints like Inch's, Amstel, and John Smith's.' One of their biggest sellers is the Emerald special, which essentially takes the mixed grill and adds a whole chicken on top. 'People look at it and think wow,' said Rahul. When it first opened, the pub focused primarily on grills and chips. However, after listening to customer feedback, the menu was expanded to include curries and naan breads. The chefs are skilled at adjusting the spice level to cater to individual preferences, ranging from mild to fiery. Rahul joked: 'We have a joke with a lot of the customers about how spicy they want it and they say really spicy and I say Indian spicy or British Indian spicy? Now we have two brilliant chefs from India. The butter chicken, I have never eaten anything like it. We won't say no to anything except things like someone wanting lamb in a butter chicken sauce because that's not a dish.' Customers can enjoy classic dishes like chicken tikka masala, lamb rogan josh, prawn masala, butter chicken, and daal makhani, along with a chef's special of lamb shank. 'We know inflation is through the roof with the cost of living, but we try to keep our prices affordable', Rahul explained

Gemfields Pauses Emerald Sales in Zambia Due to Export TariffsGemfields Pauses Emerald Sales in Zambia Due to Export TariffsGemfields, a coloured stones miner, has halted the sale of emeralds from its Kagem mine in Zambia following the reintroduction of a 15% export duty. The company anticipates the duty may be revoked, allowing a commercial-quality emerald auction in Q1 2025. The new tariff, coupled with corporate tax and royalties, amounts to a 51% levy on emerald miners, significantly higher than competing jurisdictions. This, combined with low prices, has led to production standstill at Kagem since before the tariff. Gemfields warns that low demand and tariffs could force payroll reductions at the mine.
