Dozens of businesses, cultural groups, and community groups are being forced to vacate the historic Marcus Garvey Centre in Nottingham due to a perceived fire risk. Nottingham City Council cited the need for intrusive surveys as the reason for the closure, leaving tenants with limited time to relocate and raising concerns about the lack of transparency and consultation.
Dozens of businesses, cultural groups, and community groups are being forced to leave the historic Marcus Garvey Centre and find new premises due to a "fire risk" identified by Nottingham City Council. Tenants were informed of the decision in a letter expressing the council's apologies for the "impact" it will have on businesses.
The occupants have not yet been given an official timeline for leaving the building; however, multiple business owners have stated that the property manager has told them over the phone that they have 28 days to leave. "We have staff that might have to relocate or even stop working while we figure out where we can go; it's just a lot of painstaking things that have been dropped on us at a moment's notice.
"We have lots of furniture that we have to move; at the moment, we haven't got a clue of what they are going to do; we are in the dark. We won't be able to get these rates on offices anywhere else; it will have financial implications. It happened last week, but we are still recovering from the shock."
