Nottingham tram extensions could take a decade to complete if work begins now, according to the CEO of the city's tram operator. While planning and design work are needed, a new Broad Marsh tram stop could be a quicker addition. Funding for extensions will likely come from the East Midlands Combined County Authority.

Nottingham tram extensions could be ready within a decade if work starts now as the network's boss considers projects including a new Broad Marsh tram stop. The CEO of Nottingham 's tram operator says millions of pounds worth of design and planning work is needed before extensions could be built to locations including the East Midlands Airport. In the meantime, quicker additions to the NET system could include a new tram stop to serve an NHS centre being built in the Broad Marsh area.

Tim Hesketh, the boss of Tramlink, was speaking after accounts for the last financial year recently showed the company posting a loss of £26 million. The company said that loss was in line with expectations and as Tramlink looks ahead to the end of its contract for running Nottingham trams in 2034, the focus is now shifting from keeping afloat to ensuring that the NET system is a robust one to pass on. Passenger numbers are growing on the network but given that revenues are well below what was envisaged at the start of the project, extending the network has become an increasingly realistic prospect. Key to funding the extension will be the East Midlands Combined County Authority (EMCCA), led by East Midlands Mayor Claire Ward. Having become operational in May 2024, the EMCCA is given millions every year by the government to take decisions locally and invest in regional projects. Given that the EMCCA is set to handle Nottingham trams when Tramlink's contract ends in 10 years, discussions are already underway with the authority about funding an extended tram network. Mr Hesketh said: 'The chances of a new tramline being built and operational during Claire Ward's term of office are very, very slim. 'But if Claire Ward doesn't pull the trigger to make it happen, then it will be another 10 years before it becomes a reality again
