Nottingham's tram network (NET) is considering installing overhead cameras on all trams to combat fare evasion. This measure is part of a broader effort to improve the system, including a potential timetable revamp for more frequent trams running until midnight.

Overhead cameras could be installed on the doors of all Nottingham trams as the network continues to clamp down on people not paying to travel. As part of broader investment plans in the NET network, a 'game changing' shake-up of the timetable could also be on the cards to allow more frequent trams to run right up until midnight.

A renewed focus on tackling fare evasion throughout 2024 has led to NET introducing more ticket inspectors on trams and roll out advertising messages at tram stops warning that avoiding fares is a crime. Tim Hesketh, the chief executive of Tramlink, said: 'Passenger counting will give us a much clearer, accurate view of how many people are on the network, where they get on, where they get off. Overhead cameras on every door, on every tram, anonymously count heads as they get on and off. That's the technology we're looking at. Do you support plans to extend Nottingham's tram network? It will give us a more accurate view of the percentage of fare evasion, so an ability to be more focused in the way we deal with that. 'The difference between us and Transport for London is you can't get on the Tube without going through a barrier. The difference between us and the bus is that you can't get on the bus without going past the driver. 'With our trams, you get on and off without really any intervention.' Mr Hesketh says around half of Tramlink's revenue comes from the NETGO! app, on which tram passengers can pre-purchase their tickets. Rather than allowing such passengers to simply get on the tram, Mr Hesketh says NET are working with Google to see if they could introduce technology requiring app users to 'tap on' before boarding a tra
