A man has been jailed for life after violently beating a woman and slashing her throat. Laurence Griffiths, aged 42, claimed to have been high on drugs and alcohol when he attacked the victim at his home in Loughborough Road, West Bridgford, on July 25 last year.
Griffiths initially said the pair had been hitting each other as part of a game but maintained that he simply couldn’t remember how his victim came to be lying gravely injured on his bed. Police were called by paramedics after Griffiths finally dialled 999 to get help. A kitchen knife used in the attack was later found inside the flat. The victim required extensive emergency surgery and spent two weeks in a coma after the attack, which also left her with a number of broken ribs.Griffiths was later cleared at Nottingham Crown Court of attempted murder - but had pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm with intent.
Appearing for sentence at the same venue on Friday , he was jailed for life and ordered to serve a minimum of 12 years. Detective Constable Chris Black, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “This was an appalling and sustained attack that left a woman with truly terrible injuries that could very well have proved fatal.
“Unsurprisingly this incident and the subsequent criminal trial has had a very profound impact on her so I hope she can draw some comfort from this sentence. Griffiths is a dangerous and violent man, and I am pleased he will now spend a very considerable amount of time behind bars.”
