A £40,000 rock sculpture commemorating the Mayflower voyage has been criticized as 'embarrassing' by some Nottinghamshire councillors. The Conservative-run county council has faced accusations of hypocrisy for funding the project while previously condemning a similar expenditure by a neighbouring district council.
A rock sculpture which cost Nottinghamshire taxpayers nearly £40,000 has been branded 'embarrassing'.
Many leading Nottinghamshire county councillors, including former leader Ben Bradley, raised concerns in 2024 over Newark and Sherwood District Council's £80,000 spending on sculptures. That authority decided to place the Kiddey Stones, historic sculptures which had laid under tarpaulins in a cemetery for decades, outside its new HQ.
"Is there a limit on how much you think this council should spend on sculptures and do you feel this opens you up to allegations of hypocrisy?" Councillor Bruce Laughton, Nottinghamshire County Council's deputy leader, said: "There is no limit as such.
