Milan Radulovic says his group of Broxtowe Labour councillors should not be 'punished' for taking a stand
The longstanding leader of a Labour-run Nottinghamshire council is "very upset" with his party after four members were banned from standing in upcoming elections. Milan Radulovic, who has led Broxtowe Borough Council for over 20 years, says his group cannot be "punished" for taking a stand on issues like changes to the winter fuel allowance.
The Broxtowe group of Labour councillors recently said they were "proud" to have backed a Conservative motion at a recent council meeting, criticising the Labour government's decision to start means-testing winter fuel payments. Broxtowe Borough Council was the only Labour-led Nottinghamshire council to formally criticise the move.
Broxtowe's leader added: "I think it's a clear demonstration of the fact that whatever we do in Broxtowe seems to be secondary. In Broxtowe, I would set what we have done on housing, jobs and the local economy against the record of anywhere else in the country. Broxtowe's Labour group have had several disagreements with decisions by the national party in recent years. Claims were made last year that Labour had blocked the Broxtowe Labour group's access to a bank account used to fund a Beeston community hub, which ended up closing.
