Nineteen years later, it’s finally been made into a highly anticipated BBC drama, premiering on 5 March on BBC One.-style romance in a segregated world where history has been reversed: pale-skinned people, known as “noughts”, are colonised and enslaved by dark-skinned “Crosses”.
In high school, we had regulations that natural hair had to be braided or on your scalp in cornrows. As a child I would relax my hair, and at around 12 or 13, I was like, “This burns me; I don’t want to do this and don’t know why I have to.” Since then, I’ve believed in embracing your natural hair. We have to embrace our African culture. It’s an ongoing journey because the standard, even on South African media, was white beauty and white hair.
