NRL attendance records tumble as fans flock back to footy

Entertaining football and the end of lockdowns are believed to be among the factors for a record-breaking season for crowds.

More fans attended NRL games this season than ever before in a huge boost to the code ahead of the finals.

This year’s average crowd of 18,404 is also a record. Even if no one attended the final round of the season, 2023 would still surpass the next-highest average . So far, the average attendance is up 22.6 per cent on the previous year. “All credit to the players because they have made it into an entertaining juggernaut. We should never forget that the game is about entertainment and escapism, people go to these games to escape all our problems and be entertained. That’s exactly what the game is doing.”
