The temperature at Homebush is expected to soar into the mid-30s for the season finale, but the NRL will look at delaying start times for earlier games if need be.
The NRL is open to changing the starting times for grand final day matches as it braces for the hottest premiership decider since records were kept at Sydney Olympic Park’s new weather centre more than a decade ago.
The NRL will look at allowing for half-time intervals of up to 20 minutes, implementing drinks breaks during the game and green-lighting trainers to carry more water on the field for the State Championship and NRLW deciders. “We have very extensive heat guidelines and a policy that is a standard procedure where [on] game day, if there is a belief the conditions might require intervention, we have a matrix where readings are taken.“But we’ve got plenty of room on the agenda for grand final day. I’m not expecting any of that happen, but we’ve got flexibility. There’s a lot of levers we can pull if we need to pull them.
Sports Medicine Australia heat expert and University of Sydney Professor Ollie Jay developed the NRL’s extreme heat policy, and predicted the unseasonable spring scorcher to not be as bad as matches played in the tropics during the World Cup in 2017.
