The NRL has become the first major football code to throw its support behind Prime Minister Anthony Albanese's Yes campaign for the Indigenous Voice to Parliament.

The decision makes the NRL the first football code to formally support the Yes campaign joining Tennis Australia and the Australian Olympic Committee in supporting the Voice.

The NRL has formally announced its support for the Indigenous Voice to Parliament. Picture: Hannah Peters/Getty Images "True change comes through listening, learning and taking action – and we encourage everyone in the Rugby League community to get informed by the facts, and use their voice, so that we can move forward together."

The referendum is expected to be held in mid-October just two weeks after the NRL and AFL grand finals, with both events potentially holding presentations to raise awareness with the millions around the country watching the deciders. “Tennis Australia supports the Uluru Statement of the Heart and encourages the national conversation to continue to ultimately formalise a lasting and appropriate voice for First Nations people to the national parliament,” a statement read.

“We did not take this decision lightly as we know there will be those within the Olympic movement who will vote NO and we respect their right to do so,” AOC president Ian Chesterman said.
