NSW corruption watchdog granted new powers to use illegally recorded conversations

New powers will allow the corruption watchdog in New South Wales to listen to illegally recorded conversations after its investigation into development company Toplace.

The attorney-general told NSW parliament the amendment would help ICAC's statutory functionsThe powers will allow the Independent Commission Against Corruption to use recordings that would often be considered inadmissible evidence because they were recorded illegally.

"ICAC has obtained certain evidence which appears to be records of private conversations made by a third party," he told parliament. Mr Daley said NSW Governor Margaret Beazley had granted the exemption and inserted a new section in the legislation, which expires at the end of 2025.
