Administrative bungle leaves party without a senior leader, four weeks out from statewide council elections

Liberal party is “thoroughly investigating” its failure to lodge nominations for more than 130 council candidates after sacking the state director over the administrative disaster. The Liberals issued a statement on Friday afternoon, saying what had occurred was a “setback” and “simply not good enough”, but went on to add the mistake “will not define us”.

“Effective immediately, all nomination fees will be refunded in full to those Liberal-endorsed candidates impacted by this failure.”In a statement issued after an emergency meeting late on Thursday night, the party’s state president, Don Harwin, said the executive had unanimously decided to terminate Shields’ employment over the fiasco.

A further eight have only partial coverage, such as in Penrith where one ward has only Labor candidates on the ballot. In the lead-up to the state executive meeting, a defiant Shields labelled such calls “premature” and shifted blame to the party’s de facto board led by Harwin. One of those left off – the former rugby league international turned councillor John Dorahy – started his campaign more than four weeks ago.
