The New South Wales government has propelled urgent new bail laws seeking to curb domestic violence re-offending amid a scourge of women being victim to repeat attacks by men with criminal convictions.
NSW Premier Chris Minns is confident his cabinet will approve robust new bail laws targeted at protecting women from men already charged with serious domestic violence offences.
“I do anticipate a comprehensive package and I am effectively saying, I understand the public interest, certainly the timetable about proposed legislative change, so I want to let the public and the media know there’s change coming,” Mr Minns said. “We need to be in a situation where if it looks as though there’s a pattern of behaviour, or there was very serious charges, or if the police determine that person is a high risk to the community, we keep them in remand, so the victim has an opportunity for justice in the court system,” he said.
NSW’s Opposition Leader Mark Speakman has called for mandatory monitoring devices to be installed on high-risk DV offenders, but the state government appears to be unconvinced about the measure, arguing it does not effectively tackle the breadth of the problem. Discussion on bail laws was thrust into political debate last month following the death of Forbes woman Molly Ticehurst, allegedly murdered by an ex-boyfriend charged with a string of offences.
