Sarah Lancashire won the Best Drama Performance award for her role in Happy Valley
Viewers of the National Television Awards were taken aback when Happy Valley star Sarah Lancashire won the Best Drama Performance gong.
The acting legend bagged the award for her role as Catherine Cawood in the gritty British drama. Sarah played a no-nonsense cop who had been through more heartache than most. Her daughter Becky was raped by local criminal Tommy Lee Royce, and had taken her own life shortly after giving birth to a child Royce had fathered. Catherine's world was then blown apart when Royce was released from prison.Happy Valley thrilled audiences for three series, over nine years, with many becoming huge fans of Sarah's portrayal of strong Yorkshire policeman Catherine. And her performance was so good many fans of the show didn't realise Sarah put on an accent for the show.
Even host Joel Dommett said he had no idea. And on X, formerly known as Twitter, James said: "That’s Sarah Lancashire’s real accent??! Not having it". Charlotte said: "Sarah Lancashire - queen - and who knew that’s her accent!!??" Mason said: "You mean to tell me Sarah Lancashire isn’t poppin’ about with a proper Yorkshire accent???
