Peter Dutton said the country’s growing energy demands could be met cost-effectively by building small nuclear reactors on the site of ageing coal-fired power plants.

Australia is squandering an opportunity to carefully consider nuclear energy as a partner to rapidly emerging renewable technologies, advocates say, as Opposition Leader Peter DuttonThe Liberal leader said on Friday the country’s growing energy demands could be met cost-effectively by building small nuclear reactors on the site of ageing coal-fired power plants that are due to be shut down as the economy decarbonises, calling for Australia...

“We’re losing time and what we need is to have the full discussion to say how nuclear could fit into our grid. That will give us a chance, if we do need nuclear at a later stage, if transmission lines or storage become very expensive.”The association advocates for the safe and effective use of nuclear science and technology.

Labor savaged Mr Dutton’s pitch and respected energy industry veteran Kerry Schott said nuclear, like new coal-fired power stations, were too expensive and not feasible in a low-emissions grid. “Nuclear is viable when there is nothing else around but when you have up to 80 per cent renewables, what you need is something to turn on and off,” she said. The disposal of radioactive waste from nuclear power stations was also a political nightmare for governments which would be very hard to resolve in Australia, as opposed to Europe which has used nuclear power for decades.

But the costs per megawatt hour for nuclear power from 2030 were about $140 per megawatt hour to $310 per megawatt hour. This compares with $150 per megawatt hour to $220 per megawatt hour for black coal and $140 per megawatt hour to $240 per megawatt hour for large-scale gas.
