Nearly 600 police officers in England and Wales were dismissed and banned from returning to the profession in the year leading up to March 2024, according to recent figures. The College of Policing reported a 50% increase from the previous year, with 593 officers being expelled compared to 394 in the preceding 12 months.
The data reveals that 79 of the sacked officers and specials were from a black or other ethnic minority background, accounting for 12.7 percent of the total dismissals; 530 were white, and ethnicity was not recorded in 14 cases. As of March 31 2024, eight per cent of officers in England and Wales identified as being from a BAME background.
