Nottinghamshire County Council is considering installing Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras at new recycling centres to combat the estimated £408,000 annual cost of cross-border waste dumping. The council aims to prevent misuse by non-residents and commercial traders and enforce site access restrictions.
Number plate recognition cameras could be introduced at Nottinghamshire 's new tips as part of efforts to save the county over £400,000 a year. Two new tips are set to be built in Nottinghamshire to replace sites closing in West Bridgford, Kirkby and Mansfield and Nottinghamshire County Council is now considering how it could introduce Automatic Number Plate Recognition cameras at the sites.
In a new report, the council says: "The primary benefit of ANPR to local authorities is its ability to prevent misuse by non-residents and commercial traders. It can also support with monitoring and enforcement of site access restrictions and track the usage of those who do use the sites. "Consideration will be given to how ANPR can be integrated into any new sites that are built and that will inform further investigations into its deployment on the retained network."
