A colleague told regulators that the nurse would need to be woken up if she was needed.
A senior nurse found to have routinely slept on night shifts has been struck off. Xoisa Hlatshwayo worked as the clinical lead at the Hollies Care Home in Burghfield Common, Berkshire, when another nurse told managers she would need to be woken up if other staff needed advice.
The Nursing and Midwifery Council found Hlatshwayo was sometimes working about 70 hours a week, doing shifts at Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital in the day and at the home at night. An NMC panel found she showed a "total disregard for following procedures and policies" and had put herself ahead of the "safety and wellbeing of vulnerable patients"Hlatshwayo admitted forging the signature of a colleague in a book used to record which controlled drugs had been given to residents.
That was uncovered during an unannounced check by the home's manager in April 2024, when a colleague whose signature had been recorded advised she had not countersigned documents herself. On being confronted by the manager, Hlatshwayo said she was sorry and resigned with immediate effect, the NMC said. It said her misconduct was "very serious", raised "fundamental questions" about her professionalism and was "fundamentally incompatible" with her remaining registered as a nurse.
