Paris Tautu was left fuming when her daughter, Mahinarangi, 5, had her name cut without permission because staff struggled to pronounce it.
A mum has been left seething after her daughter's nursery began shortening her name, claiming it is "too hard to pronounce". Paris Tautu loves her daughter's name, Mahinarangi, which translates to 'moon in the sky' in Maori.
The taunts have left Mahinarangi so upset that she no longer corrects those who mispronounce it. Her name, which carries significant cultural importance within the Ngāti Raukawa heritage, has been passed down through the generations. "I am sad that in 2021, in Aotearoa , a five-year-old girl has lost the pride that comes with her beautiful name. It made me so angry, especially because they'd use Maori resources in her classes."
Paris said she has taught Mahinarangi to break down her name into single syllables to educate people and help them to say her name correctly.
