Inspectors claimed that pupils’ ‘personal, educational and social development’ were ‘detrimentally’ affected by their segregated classes at the Gateshead Jewish Nursery School in Tyne and Wear.

The report, published last week, said: ‘Leaders and managers operate a policy of unlawful segregation by sex during formal lesson periods.‘The policy and practice amount to unlawful discrimination contrary to section 13 of the Equality Act 2010.The report said the segregation ‘detrimentally’ affected the students’ development

At that council-funded school in Birmingham, the segregation extended to break times, school clubs and school trips.Ofsted inspectors noted that despite the ‘variable’ teaching methods, the pupils do ‘enjoy coming to school’.
