ReNew Health, a nursing home chain and subject of an LAist investigation, will pay $7 million as part of a settlement agreement over Medicare fraud allegations.Attorneys for the case say this is the first settlement they’re aware of involving a federal COVID waiver program. Federal and state prosecutors alleged that ReNew Health billed residents under the waiver program, even when the residents didn’t need the care.
The federal and state investigation into ReNew Health Group started after whistleblowers filed a lawsuit under the False Claims Act in October 2020. The case was under seal until a settlement was reached last month.
