A New York City school board is demanding the city's education department convene a commission to review its gender identity guidelines concerning girls’ athletics.
“One of the things that I think every member of this council strives for is greater parent engagement, greater parent involvement and a partnership with the DOE, specifically on issues that are involving our children – whether it's a social issue, whether it's an academic issue,” board president Leonard Silvermanformed out of concerns the city’s education department neglected to incorporate viewpoints from individuals involved in girls’ sports when it created the guidelines in 2019.
Quarles cited concerns regarding biological female athletes’ safety, as well as athletic integrity, for her support of the resolution. New York City Councilmember Erik Bottcher, D-Greenwich Village, argued the action instead further disadvantages transgender participants. Councilmember Bottcher told the board the resolution would impact the greater school community in addition to transgender athletes.
