The 2024 Native Youth Olympics kicked off Thursday at the Alaska Airlines Center with the opening ceremonies and three competitions.
Published: Apr. 26, 2024 at 10:14 AM AKDTANCHORAGE, Alaska - A much-anticipated week for hundreds of Alaska youth every year, the 2024 Native Youth Olympics kicked off Thursday at the Alaska Airlines Center in Anchorage.
Bethel’s Jordan Klejka was successful at 54 inches for girls gold, while Lower Kuskokwim School District’s Shawna Paul and Mt. Edgecumbe’s Nevaeh George both hit 50 inches.For the boys, Nanwalek’s Sean Moonin’s 80-inch mark was good for gold, while Bethel’s Billy Nicholai and Mt. Edgecumbe’s Franz Femoyle rounded out the top three.
While all of the games are challenging, somehow the wrist carry is harder than it looks, with athletes hooking one wrist over a pole held by two people known as the carriers. The suspended athletes must maintain that position while being carried through the course without any part of the body touching the floor.
Meanwhile, Unalaska’s Nick Luois Amora circled laps around the Alaska Airlines Center to the tune of 472 feet.
