On July 5-Aug. 17, Oak Park Festival Theatre presents the timeless tale of love found and lost in “Romeo & Juliet.”
Rachel Jones and August Forman play the title lovers in the Oak Park Festival Theatre’s production of Shakespeare’s “Romeo & Juliet” presented July 7-Aug. 17 at Austin Gardens in Oak Park.
“This is a play where there’s a generational divide between the older generation and the younger generation. That’s part of what leads to the tragedy in the end,” said Artistic Director Peter G. Andersen, who directs Shakespeare’s masterpiece. “I feel right now that there is a similar divide between those who are millennials and Gen Z and some of the older generations and we’re trying to find a way to communicate.
August Forman, who plays Romeo, was an instant choice for the director. “They came into the audition and there was really no competition,” Andersen said. “They have that leading man, romantic quality that I think Romeo has to have.” Forman noted this production will be distinctive because, “We are letting the text speak for itself. We’re not doing ‘Romeo & Juliet’ on Mars. It’s not 1920’s New York.”
Andersen cast Rachel Jones as Juliet because, “She is really a savant when it comes to Shakespeare,” he said. “She was leagues and miles ahead of the competition.”
