Police say the 28-year-old man appeared to not only know his killer but that the two acted friendly with one another before things devolved into a gunfight.

OAKLAND — Police here have identified a 28-year-old man who was killed during a March 9 shootout, just minutes after he and his killer appeared to have a friendly conversation.

Randell Turner was shot around 10:30 p.m. on March 9 on the 1300 block of East 17th Street in Oakland, and died at a hospital roughly 30 minutes later, police said. Police have not announced any arrests in his death.Arrests, car recoveries and gun seizures rise in Oakland after state law-enforcement surge

According to police, Turner was hanging out with a group of people outside a liquor store on East 17th Street at 14th Avenue when a black sedan pulled up and a man got out. Turner and the man appeared to warmly greet each other and walked into the store together, authorities said. But as the man was leaving they began to argue and it escalated into a fight.

Turner and the man both produced guns and fired at each other, and Turner was struck at least once, police said. He fled to a vehicle, which police say drove a short distance and crashed.
