Driver pulled away despite woman's walking stick, which was attached to her wrist, being lodged in the door
An elderly pensioner with Alzheimer's has had both legs amputated after being dragged under a bus. Joan Scott, then 82, had been heading into Newcastle city centre from her home in Wallsend when she was refused entry onto a bus driven by Scott Cliff.
"He shut the doors to prevent her getting on the bus. As the doors were closing Mrs Scott placed her walking stick, which was strapped around her wrist, in the centre of the doors. It seems the stick was not large enough to activate a safety function on the bus. Passengers on the bus told the court that Joan had been at the bus stop waiting to get on and they saw her holding her hands up to the door. They then saw her lose her balance and fall onto the road.
Her son, Brian, said: “I feel that the driver of the bus has, on that day, taken my mother – taken the head of my family in such a shocking way. She is trapped in a broken body caused single-handedly by the actions of one person. Mr Cliff held a position to help and protect the vulnerable by providing a place of safety on the bus. But he didn’t do that for my mother and that kills me.
She added in a victim impact statement: "She has days when she sits and cries while rubbing what's left of her legs. She's not the grandma I remember, she's a different woman now." Sentencing him, Judge Thomas said: "What you did, extraordinarily really, was to close the doors against her, knowing she wanted to get on and was almost about to get on. You then faced forward, checked your mirror and drove off.
