Filipino pole vaulting ace Ernest John 'EJ' Obiena proved once more that he stands head and shoulders above the competition in Asia after defending his Asian Athletics Championships title at the Suphachalasai National Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand on Sunday, July 16.
Obiena reclaimed the gold by establishing a new meet record of 5.91 meters.The 27-year-old Olympian started his jump at 5.51 meters before clearing 5.56 and 5.80 meters with relative ease. He then topped the 5.71-meter clearance to match his record jump in the 2019 edition of the tournament in Doha where he first ruled the competition.The tournament was called off in 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.Obiena then tried to post a new Asian and personal record of 6.
Obiena seized another gold by posting a new Asian record of 6.0 meters at the Bergen Jump Challenge in Norway on June 10.Obiena also has not missed the podium yet this season.His medal winning streak started at the SEA Games and was followed by a 5.72-meter performance at the Memorial Irena Szewinska for the bronze medal in Bydgoszcz, Poland on June 7.After establishing the new Asian mark at Bergen, the pride of Tondo, Manila hurdled 5.
