The company behind the Titan submersible was warned by more than three dozen experts of potentially “catastrophic” issues with its Titanic mission years ago

The wreckage of the Titanic, which sank in 1912 on its first trip from England to New York, lies 12,500 feet beneath the surface and about 400 miles south of St. John’s, Newfoundland.

Documents from a 2018 lawsuit filed by OceanGate against Mr Lochridge alleged he had shared confidential information outside the company. The papers show the former director of marine operations had raised concerns about the submersible’s viewport, claiming it was only certified to operate in depths of up to 1,300m.

Following a meeting, Mr Lochridge was fired, court papers show, with the company claiming it appeared that that was what their former employee was after. The engineer and submarine pilot alleged wrongful termination before the two parties reached a settlement later in 2018. But the company said in its complaint that Mr Lochridge “is not an engineer and was not hired or asked to perform engineering services on the Titan”.by Canadian aircraft on Tuesday. Robotic undersea search operations were diverted to the area where the sounds seemed to originate, but there was still no tangible sign of the missing vessel, the Coast Guard said on Twitter.

The mini-sub was designed to remain underwater for 96 hours, according to its specifications, giving its five occupants until Thursday morning before air supply would run out, if the craft was still intact.
