Ofgem proposes new tariffs requiring energy suppliers to offer 'zero standing charge' options, potentially saving Octopus Energy customers up to £676 annually. Standing charges, a fixed daily fee regardless of energy consumption, disproportionately impact lower users. The proposal aims to address rising household energy debt and provide more choices for consumers.
Octopus Energy customers stand to pocket savings of up to £676 on their energy bills with the potential removal of a daily charge under a new tariff. Ofgem , the energy watchdog, has unveiled plans that would require energy suppliers to offer "zero standing charge" tariffs to consumers, in addition to the current options.
This means that Octopus Energy customers on a two-year fix could see a saving of £676 if the charges were eliminated immediately. Ofgem has acknowledged that tens of countless consumers passionately advocate for the complete removal of standing charges; however, it noted that high-energy users, often requiring extra power due to medical and health needs, would see their bills soar. The decision was thus made to preserve tariff choices for households.
