There is evidence of human activity dating back to the Neolithic period
Although it's not an island in the traditional sense, as a body of water separated from the mainland, it's somewhat of an 'island' in a less conventional way. Pilling is a village and civil parish within the borough of Wyre , under ten miles from Poulton-le-Fylde and Lancaster.
The moss lands on the other side covers some 9,000 acres and replaced forests that covered the area in the early Iron Age. In the 12th Century, much of Pilling came into the possession of the Cannons of Cockersand Abbery which resulted in farms or 'houses' to supply the Abbey's needs.
