A South Shore Arts vintage poster by artist Fred Semmler created in 2000 depicts the fountain, flora, landscaping and details of the elegant marble and Indiana limestone features of the distinct front entrance portico of the $10 million, newly unveiled in 1989, Center for Visual and Performing Arts, as framed and displayed in the lower atrium lobby of the facility at 1040 Ridge Road, home to South Shore Arts.
Phil Smidt’s restaurant was sold that year for new ownership, and it closed a few years later in October 2007. Artist Mitch Markowitz sits near his work on during a display and discussion of his art at the Pines Village Retirement Community in Valparaiso. The “Just Around the Corner” poster series seeks new artists to keep the series thriving while engaging the upcoming generations at an artistic level. As this series grows, it aims to showcase the South Shore and inspire pride within the region.
Markovitz, with roots living in Knox, Indiana, just a stone’s throw away from my own family farm, was instrumental as the art coordinator for that new series. He also created eight of the first batch of 19 posters unveiled in 1999 with much fanfare during a ceremony in Chicago.
