Royal Mail is poised to eliminate Saturday deliveries for second-class letters under proposals being advanced by Ofcom . The regulatory body announced that following a consultation period, it has provisionally determined that curtailing the second-class letter service to alternate weekdays, while maintaining six-day-a-week deliveries for first-class mail , would continue to satisfy the requirements of postal users. The regulatory agency also unveiled plans to reduce Royal Mail 's delivery targets.
For first-class mail, the target would decrease from 93% to 90% delivered the next day, and for second-class mail, it would drop from 98.5% to 95% delivered within three days. This adjustment aligns Royal Mail's performance more closely with international and European market standards, it stated. Natalie Black, Ofcom's group director for networks and communications, remarked: 'The world has transformed - we're dispatching a third of the letters we were 20 years ago. We must reform the postal service to safeguard its future and guarantee its effectiveness for the entire UK. However, we are prioritizing the aspects most crucial to the public - maintaining six-day-a-week first-class mail at the same price across the UK, and implementing a price cap on second-class stamps.
