Ofcom has threatened to rewrite the BBC’s operating licence if controversial cuts to local radio deprive listeners of news from their area 📻 The watchdog warned the BBC not to “leave audiences behind”

Ofcom said that the BBC move to “streamline” its local radio and TV services included closing TV opt-out services in Cambridge and Oxford.

The Operating Licence sets outs the obligations the BBC must meet under the Royal Charter that guarantees the licence fee. Ofcom can impose conditions and programme quotas to ensure that local audiences are “well served” by BBC News.channels to create a single channel which would “retain the option of a domestic-only stream for important UK news events”.

“But in making these changes, it must continue to deliver content for all audiences in the UK, including UK and international news and current affairs for domestic TV and online audiences, and tailored news and current affairs content for those in the nations and regions, which make an important contribution to the delivery of the BBC’s remit.

Committee chair, Julian Knight, said: “The planned cuts to programming have provoked genuine disquiet in communities up and down the country, where BBC local radio stations play a key role in providing local information that is increasingly unavailable elsewhere. Any changes must be in the best interests of listeners and licence payers.”
