Authorities detail what happened in an Arlington home explosion last December that killed one man, displaced residents and gripped the D.C. suburb.
The man who was killed in an Arlington home explosion in December probably caused the blast himself, bringing up to 35 gallons of gasoline into his basement that were set off with firearms, matches or a lighter, county and federal officials said at a news conference Friday.
The explosion displaced the family that shared a duplex with him and sent flames, smoke and debris raining down on the Bluemont area in December. Officials said that they had reviewed some social media posts from Yoo expressing suspicion of government and law enforcement, but that they could not connect those to the cause of the explosion.
Then, late on the night of Dec. 4, someone began firing “a flare-type gun” in the 800 block of North Burlington Street, police said. When officers arrived at Yoo’s home about 5 p.m., they were met with gunfire, and a barricade situation ensued.Shortly before 8:30 p.m., an enormous blast from inside the home, heard for miles around, reduced the place to splinters and rained debris all over the block. Police said remains later found in the rubble are presumed to be Yoo’s.
