Ofsted will roll out changes to school inspections following outcry over the death of headteacher Ruth Perry But its chief executive rebuffed calls to scrap the one-word grading system, which has been slammed by school leaders 🔴 poppyeh reports

Announcing a host of changes on Friday, Ms Spielman said Ofsted will disentangle its scrutiny of safeguarding in schools from wider checks during an inspection.

“We won’t be soft on safeguarding,” she said. “However, we do recognise that some gaps in schools’ knowledge or practice are easier to put right than others.” The watchdog chief said on Friday she recognised that “distilling all that a school is and does into a single word makes some in the sector uncomfortable, particularly when there are consequences of the grade awarded”.

Ms Spielman will likely face a tough battle finding a compromise between teachers’ calls for a root-and-branch overhaul of the current inspections system and Ms Keegan’s reluctance to impose significant changes. School unions said measures announced by the chief inspector fell short of the scale of change required to regain the trust of teachers following Ms Perry’s death.

The union leader called for Ofsted to scrap one-word ratings and launch a “more fundamental review of how inspection works”.
